For the third consecutive race, Raphael Matos narrowly missed the Fast Six and ultimately posted his best starting position of the season by qualifying 10th at the IZOD IndyCar Series Honda Indy Edmonton.
Matos turned his fastest lap of 1:01.7015 and climbed into fourth with just over two minutes remaining in the second qualifying round, but was bumped from the Fast Six during the final two laps, missing by just .2621.
“It was a good qualifying session today,” Matos said. “It was great to advance to the second round. We made some improvements to the car between the first and second rounds. We’re missing a little bit, but we are close on the set-up and we keep getting closer.”
Matos turned 11 laps in the first qualifying session, including a fast lap of 1:01.8319 to advance to the second round in sixth place. He ran 10 laps in round two with his fastest lap coming on lap eight. Matos will start on row five with Justin Wilson.
“This is a physically demanding track and that will make for a long race, but I have been training really hard and I feel really fit,” Matos said. “So I’m hoping that will help me in the race tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it.”
